The SSCD Guide Training Scheme

Guide Training Scheme  Introduction

The SSCD Guide Training Scheme enables volunteers to train, qualify and register as guides.  Skiing is a hazardous activity and it is vital that our volunteers have the support of proper training to ensure safe practice at all times.  The scheme is the responsibility of the Training Officer. The scheme embodies the SSCD ethos that the needs of the Skiers are paramount, on and off skis.  The 24 hour commitment a guide makes requires care, patience and understanding. Whilst training is open to Skiers of all levels of skiing proficiency, qualification as a guide requires the ability to:

  • ski to a minimum standard both on artificial slope and mountain snow conditions;
  • choose a good line on the snow and have a sense of direction;
  • evaluate snow conditions and have a knowledge of safety in the mountains;
  • have an in-depth understanding of safe conduct on skis;
  • foresee obstacles and thus avoid stress to a skier;
  • inspire confidence in and accept responsibility for the well-being of a skier at all times;
  • make a 100% commitment to the skier in your charge.

Only full (individual) SSCD members over the age of 16 years can qualify as Guides.
